ENC 2135 pertains to research, genre, and context. To me at first glance, those three words seemed so familiar to me. I felt comfortable and confident with my prior knowledge to the three words that our class will revolve around. Reading chapter 1 in The Bedford Book of Genres completely changed how I felt about ENC 2135. Just reading about genre alone showed that there is so much depth to this class. Genres are not simply labels to writing, which is what I thought originally; it is so much deeper than that. I felt uncomfortable about reading about something that I did not entirely know. It felt satisfying in the end learning about the variety of genres and the conventions that are involved. The elements that genres carry are each unique. Style, design, and sources are what make up genres, which for me was new to me. I feel comfortable with genres now however, and how to construct one so my writing can revolve around it. A genre is like a focus point and it will allow me to express the purpose of my writing, especially since I understand the specific techniques to design one. Knowing the full depth of genre would have been a great assist when writing my first rough draft for the personal narrative. Now I feel comfortable with genre and I feel that I could use it to my advantage.
